The Edmeades Family in New Zealand
The name of Edmeades is intricately connected to Kent in England, and to the Parish of Meopham, where various generations of the family were yeoman farmers and brewers. The Edmeades are in particular linked to Nurstead Court where members of the family resided from the late 1500s onwards, until one Henry Edmeades purchased the freehold of the of the manor in 1767.
The Edmeades family history in New Zealand begins with the family of Thomas and Sarah Edmeades nee Pullen, whose many descendants numbered amongst the emigrants who chose to leave England during the late 1800s in search of better lives. Thomas and Sarah married in Chilham in 1827, and had 12 children. Of those, seven children chose to make homes for themselves in Australia or New Zealand, including; Ann (1828-), Thomas (1828-1911), Alfred (1833-1922), Henry (1837-1938), Daniel (1841-), George, and Martha.
